On Friday, 37-year-old Gill Parker Payne, of Gastonia, North Carolina, pleaded guilty to ripping the hijab off of a muslim woman’s head.
On December 11, 2015, Gill Parker Payne was en route from Chicago to Albuquerque, on Southwest Airlines. He was seated several rows behind a woman wearing a hijab (an islamic head covering for women). He approached the woman during the flight and demanded, “Take it off! This is America!” When she refused, Payne ripped the hijab off of her head.
According to Payne’s attorney, he is serving two months home detention while awaiting sentencing. He was facing up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine, but his acceptance of a plea deal will mean probation and a possible fine.
